MY DATA SCIENCE LEARNING JOURNEY

Yippy!!!!

You made it!

If you are reading this it’s implies you are either thinking of embarking the journey of honing the skills for the most sought after job which Harvard Business School Review said is the "Sexiest Job in the 21st Century".

Starting out in Data-science can really be overwhelming due to plethora of resources available and difficulty in navigating. Don’t worry you aren’t alone this was my state February, 2018 when I decided to switch career from an Engineering background to Data Science, and that’s why this article was written for all data enthusiasts who reached out to ask for guidance towards starting out in Data Science. After reading this I’m sure you will have all your fears and anxiety gone.

Is that a prophesy?

Just try read to the end!!!

I am not an expert because I’ve got so much to learn and neither a beginner having learnt a stack of tools to crunch and torture any data (Excel,PowerBI,SQL, Python, MachineLearning &Deeplearning). So my experience in the last 20months , I will be sharing resources that has been pivotal to my learning curve in sequence of how I took them as a complete novice to getting my first Job as an Analyst.

N:B No single course or resource will make you proficient so it's a long journey and it's a Marathon not a SPRINT.

As a complete beginner this was the route I followed;

Are you ready!!

Let the drum roll begin!!!

1. Data analysis by PwC (5 courses) - I took the first 3 courses

https://www.coursera.org/specianalyticslizations/pwc-a

-Learnt Excel ,PowerPoint & Presentation

Excel still remain the underutilized tool for Data Analytics, so learning this tool will be helpful in your journey.

2. MIT python course

https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/6-0001-introduction-to-computer-science-and-programming-in-python-fall-2016/

I complemented this with 2 great books ; Python for Informatics & Automating boring stuff with Python.

3. Descriptive & Inferential Statistics course by Udacity

https://www.udacity.com/course/intro-to-descriptive-statistics--ud827

https://www.udacity.com/course/intro-to-inferential-statistics--ud201

You can complement this with Practical Statistics for Data-scientist book.

4. Python for Data-science and Machine Learning on Udemy

5. Microsoft Professional Certification for Data-science (14 courses)

https://academy.microsoft.com/en-us/professional-program/

Microsoft will be retiring this program this year 31/12/2019, however you can still take the courses individually here ;

Feel free to reach out to me on the sequence of how to take the courses. It's a long and challenging ride which you enjoy
6. Andrew NG Machine Learning Course on coursera

https://www.coursera.org/learn/machine-learning

7. TOOK A BREAK AND PARTICIPATED IN COMPETITIONS AND PROJECTS TO STRENGTHEN MY KNOWLEDGE OF LESSON LEARNT FROM SEVERAL COURSES

8. Feature Engineering

https://www.udemy.com/course/feature-engineering-for-machine-learning/

9. Feature Selection

Most importantly PRACTISE! PRACTISE!! PRACTISE!!!

I understood most concepts taught in courses better after participating in competitions , so pick up datasets on ;

-Kaggle :

-Zindi :

-Analytics Vidhya : https://datahack.analyticsvidhya.com/?utm_source=feed_navbar
Lastly one way to stay motivated and not loose enthusiasm is to join a data Community as you keep whetting those skills. My friend and I launched a Telegram data commuity (https://t.me/joinchat/KCKqnBa6HjOnCWM7F6-9jQ)
 to help enthusiasts navigate their way, so feel free to join and also reach out when you need help.

I am always available to help in my capacity towards democratizing AI, Data-science and Machine Learning.

Kindly drop your claps.
